Islington Town Hall Wedding Photographer
As an Islington Town Hall wedding photographer, I’ve photographed many couples here and know exactly how to make the most of the building, the rooms, the staircase, the corridors and the streets around it.
And if you are planning a Saturday wedding in the summer, don’t be surprised by just how busy it can be. Islington Town Hall is a high-volume register office, with multiple ceremonies taking place throughout the day. It’s not unusual to run into a couple of brides while you’re there!
Islington Town Hall Wedding Photography
Islington Town Hall is one of London’s most popular places to get married, and for good reason.
Right in the heart of Islington on Upper Street, this beautiful neo-classical town hall is a perfect choice if you want a London wedding that feels intimate, relaxed and understated, without losing any of the character and occasion of a proper wedding day.
A little bit of history
Islington Town Hall opened in 1930 and has been at the centre of civic life in the borough ever since.
It isn’t just a wedding venue, either. The building still has an important role in Islington life: births and deaths are officially registered and the Council Chamber continues to be used for full council meetings.
Some other interesting facts:
♥ In 1930, around 3,000 Arsenal fans gathered outside Islington Town Hall to welcome the team home after their first FA Cup victory. It’s still the place where Arsenal celebrate their victories.
♥ Hidden beneath the Town Hall complex is a Cold War-era bunker built as protection against a possible nuclear attack.
♥ Queen Elizabeth II was welcomed to Islington on these very steps in 1953.
Why Islington Town Hall is so good for wedding photographs
The corridor
A long corridor is flooded with soft, natural light. It’s where you’ll spend the first moments as a newly married couple with a bit of welcome privacy to soak it all in.
The staircase
There are opportunities for photographs on the stairs inside the building, as well as on the impressive steps outside the main entrance.
Couples walk up the steps with a few nerves before the ceremony starts and later walk down hand in hand, about to start a new journey.
For photos, the staircase works well for rainy days – not wanting to jinx anything but in all the years shooting at Islington I have only ever done one group picture inside!
The characterful local streets provide endless backdrops for portraits of just the two of you. Just a ten minute meander can result in a string of lovely portraits.
Islington Town Hall is a place I love returning to. And, as it’s also where I got married, it holds a little extra special significance.
It may be one of London’s busiest register offices, but once you’re inside, you have the opportunity to make the day your own.
